Nortel breaks IP wide open

Internet-enabled devices emerge
Four more companies believe enough in the performance of Nortel Networks Corp.'s Open IP Environment routing software to integrate it into their products.
HP ProCurve Networking, a division of Hewlett-Packard Co., Palo Alto, Calif.; Sitera Inc., Longmont, Colo., a network-processor manufacturer; Hyperchip Inc., Montreal, a petabit router maker; and Enea OSE Systems AB, Taby, Sweden, an embedded operating-system vendor, are the latest to use the Open IP Environment software to develop advanced Internet-enabled products.
Nortel's Open IP Environment is routing and IP software that can Internet-enable a number of devices, including servers, PCs, mass-market appliances, mobility devices, set-top boxes and processors. This technology will reduce the need for traditional routers by enabling routing technology to be embedded directly into these devices, the company said. Because of the modular software design, developers can choose functions and features based on the size of the device to be IP-enabled, the environment in which the device will be used and the needs of the end users, according to the company.
Open IP Environment uses open standards and APIs to perform IP functions such as routing, authentication, security, encapsulation and tunneling, along with IP applications such as policy, network management and accounting.
Since introducing the software last November, Nortel has amassed 200 companies interested in integrating it into their products. "Open IP Environment is an important enabler of high-performance networks," said Kalai Kalaichelvan, general manager of Open IP Environment at Nortel. "Together with these companies, Nortel is providing customers with the Internet functionality required for developing new networking applications based on open APIs."
Ron Westfall, senior analyst at Current Analysis Inc., Sterling, Va., sees great promise in the Open IP Environment.
"I am fully enthusiastic about the Open IP initiative," Westfall said. "A lot of Internet routing is actually wrapped up in proprietary code,Cisco [Systems Inc.'s] IOS. Open IP gives the industry the ability to develop routing code that is truly open, to take routing code and apply it to whatever technology developers are working on.
"Clearly, parties using the Open IP Environment software understand the benefits of open source routing code," Westfall said.
